Soft Morning Socks

You may ask – why soft mornings? What does that even mean. Well, soft mornings are my saving grace in this 2020. For me they consist of a simple, predictable way of waking up and beginning my new days.

Yes, you can knit a sweater.

Knitting a sweater is probably one of the most satisfying things you could possibly do. There is something so fantastic about the process of turning literal string into a finished, wearable garment. One that almost looks like it could be…

the F L A W by Molly Peacok “The best thing abou the F L A W by Molly Peacok
“The best thing about a hand-made pattern is the flaw.
Sooner or later in a hand-loomed rug,
Among the squares and flattened triangles,
A little red nub might soar a blue field,
Or a purple cross might sneak between
The neat ochre teeth of the border.
The flaw we live by, the wrong color floss,
Now wreaths among uniform strands
And, because it does not match,
Makes a red bird fly,
Turning a blue field into sky.
It is almost, after a long silence, a word
Spoken aloud, a hand saying through the flaw,
I’m A L I V E, discovered by your eye.”

My second pair of #intertwinedsocks feature a contrast toe, an unplanned design choice that I love. A reminder of the handmade flurry of knitting. (Main color of socks is rosy by @sundayfibreco) in planned contrast is a mystery leftover mini.

Journaling doesn’t have to look the same every d Journaling doesn’t have to look the same every day, every week, every month, or every year. These journals I hold are from seasons of journaling (and each season looked different).

Over the next week I will be sharing more and more about my Patreon. Please do not feel pressure to join. Of course, I would love to have each and everyone of you there. However, I also know that it doesn’t make sense for everyone to pay a monthly fee. None of content on Instagram will change, and I will continue to host biweekly zoom young knitter nights.

Each Monday, on Patreon I will post a journal prompt 💗 something to get your mind going. Maybe you add it into your journal, maybe you write some words down in your agenda or maybe you add your response to the notes app on your phone.

The point of these prompts is to slow down reflect. How you slow down and how you reflect is up to you 💗

Do you journal? Have you journaled? Do you want to journal? Let me know !!

I draw a lot of inspiration from @me_and_orla and I draw a lot of inspiration from @me_and_orla and her book #hashtagauthentic . I love her phrase / concept of doing something worth photographing.

For me this looks like getting out fairy lights, stepping into the alley next to my apartment and artfully arranging a basket of yarnie goodness with a book peaking out to say hello.

Making magic perhaps.

I then go into my favorite editing apps (ColorStory 🥰 and head to the cozy filters) then I’ll add some light flairs. And then into another app (meitu ✨ and the magic brush tool 🪄) to make those little words.

It’s a a process. And that doesn’t make it inauthentic or less magic. It’s a process that helps me express creativity each day. It’s a process that is cherish.

The fast nature of Instagram is an antidote to how long it takes for me to knit sweaters. Sometimes I wonder, will people get bored of seeing the same sweater for months? I don’t think so. Sweater knitting takes time, especially as I knit up socks with love and abundance. And it’s real ! Taking a few months to knit a sweater makes sense.

So there’s magic in the quick snapshots, and in the looong days of sweater making. A balance, a dialectic, a making adventure.

The yarn — @murkydepthsdyes — is magical and beautiful. This sock uses the osby deep dips mini sock set. It reminded me of the beautiful story of Miss Rumphius. It is a delightful children’s book and chronicles a woman’s mission to continue a family tradition of going to faraway places, living by the sea, and making the world a more beautiful place.

These socks make mundane days more beautiful- and gosh that’s a big part of why I knit socks. For that special moment of choosing socks!!

Anyway, happy knitting friends. Your support means the world.

Last night we saw fireworks in celebration of Joe’s inauguration ✨ I really didn’t think we would see celebration, DC has been so eery since Jan 6. I was in disbelief when I saw the fireworks and heard cheers from my neighbors.

Finishing up one sock and casting on the next. Here’s to 2021 and working hard to make this year different than last. And living in the dialectics.

Maybe it should say math + art = knit design ? Or Maybe it should say math + art = knit design ? Or maybe small creative biz or maybe yarn chicken ? I don’t dye yarn .. but I’d assume math shows up there as well.

Probably my most used knitting tool upgrade as buying a food scale .. purely to weigh yarn. Counting stitches and then calculating yardage per row and then maybe total yardage or yardage per gram ?? Like math and art both have to coexist in order for me to create a final project that I love and treasure.

I feel Like knitting actually forces me to use some of that prealgebra stuff.’like maybe I could write word problems for elementary school math?

There are a lot of people who are in the team ‘I’m terrible at math’ ... when it comes to knitting math ... I’d say I’m quite good. And hey we are allowed to acknowledge what we are good at!!!

Here I’m laying out my swatches for my #mazzycardigan which lets you make your swatches into the pockets (yessss). I’m using @sundayfibreco homebody worsted in rosewood and it’s magical and squishy. I can’t wait for this cardi. For now I need to focus on my boxcar sweater ... but I’m coming for you mazzy!! Me and math are coming soon!!

Thanks for coming to my math talk. Dyers .. please tell me if math is something you have to use !! Or tell me somewhere else where you surprisingly have to lean really in math brain?

meet the maker Monday + FO share !

Hey there! I’m Emma :) the knitter maker designer human behind bloom and create. I knit because it brings me joy and also allows me to wear my makes with pride. Every time I wear a hand knit item my mood is lifted. It makes me feel better, and reminds that I can do hard things! We knitters are a committed bunch.

Today I’m wearing my newly finished #easyheadband by @sari_n_ in @knothouseyarns (this pattern is such a breeze- and I love the finished object so much and it was so easy to knit up.

I’m also wearing my #weekendersweater by @dreareneeknits in patons classic wool. (Another easy and wearable and comfy knit item).

Anyway that’s enough about me. I hope you have an okay Monday. And also that you wear your hand knits 🧶🧦✨ the world deserves to see them !!!
